In this guide, we list what fruits and vegetables are in season in Napa supermarkets this spring and share suggestions for making the most of them.

Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables You’ll Find at the Grocery Store this Spring

Eating seasonally lets you enjoy the freshest and most delicious fruits and veggies spring has to offer. Selecting local, in-season produce not only gives you more flavor and nutritional value, but also supports the dedicated farmers and businesses in your community. This means when you shop locally, you’re playing a direct role in strengthening your local economy!

So, what’s in season this spring?

Apricots

Apricots are a type of stone fruit that are packed with vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants like beta-carotene, lutein, and more. These nutrients help nourish your gut, skin, and eyes. In fact, some experts even call them a superfood for all their health benefits!1

Soft, juicy, and sweet, apricots are incredibly versatile fruits that can be enjoyed all on their own. You can also turn them into jams, bake them into cobblers, or grill them with honey on skewers for a mouthwatering spring treat.

In California, apricots are usually in season between May and July.

Berries

Nothing says spring like fresh berries and jam! In Napa Valley, many different types of berries are at their peak this season, including:

  • Blackberries
  • Blueberries
  • Raspberries
  • Boysenberries
  • Strawberries
  • Mulberries

Sweet, juicy, and tangy, berries make a refreshing snack by themselves, but you can enhance their flavors further by adding them to your favorite spring recipes like jams, preserves, salads, pies, and so much more.

In California, berries are typically in season between April and July

Avocados

Avocados are a quintessential California fruit that thrive in Napa Valley’s warm climate. They are shaped like eggs with rough, bumpy outer skin that ranges from green to dark purple and brown.

With a mild, slightly nutty flavor and a creamy texture, avocados make a great addition to toast, sandwiches, salads, dressings, and dips. You can even blend them with chocolate, milk, and maple syrup to make avocado pudding!

In Northern California, avocados are in season from February to November

Cherries

Cherries are a type of stone fruit known for their sweet-and-sour flavor and deep red color. They are loaded with iron, magnesium, Vitamin C, potassium, and more essential nutrients that support your immune system.

Cherries make a great snack solo, but you can also incorporate them into desserts like cheesecake, fresh spring cocktails, or a compote topping for your next batch of homemade pancakes.

California cherries are usually in season from May through June

Artichokes

Although artichokes are considered vegetables, they are actually a type of perennial thistle! The part we eat is a cluster of flower buds that are harvested before they bloom into bright purple flowers. These buds are rich in fiber and essential nutrients like folate, Vitamin C, and more.

The outer buds of an artichoke are usually tough and stringy, while the inside—also called the heart—is soft, juicy, and full of flavor. With a slightly nutty taste that pairs well with salty or tangy foods, artichokes make a great addition to pizzas, chip dips, and salads.

California Artichokes are in season from March through May

Snow Peas

Snow peas are edible pea pods with a sweet flavor and crisp, juicy texture. They contain high amounts of fiber, Vitamin K, Vitamin C, and other antioxidants that improve digestion and fortify the immune system.

While snow peas make a delicious and healthy snack all on their own, you can sauté them with olive oil, lemon juice, and sesame seeds for a light spring side dish.

In Napa, snow peas are typically in season from March to June.

Asparagus

Similar to artichokes, asparagus is also a vegetable that is technically part of a perennial flowering plant. The spears are harvested before the flowers bloom and are rich in folate, Vitamin A, and fiber.

You can steam, grill, or roast asparagus spears with fresh herbs, lemon juice, and local cheeses to create a variety of fresh spring side dishes.

In Northern California, asparagus is typically in season from May through June
